This abundance by no means meant theat they are easy to see, and I got quite a sore neck from peering into the canopy. White Wagtail Common Starling I also managed to get views of the Firecrests, which as I mentioned at the start are quite common. Eurasian Blackcaps, while even more common, are also always a pleasure.

Of course, now that I wanted to get a photo, I only found the female. Some sorely needed comic relief came via a Japanese Tit. Still, seeing a few birds is better than seeing no birds, even though this Shanghai suburb can hardly make a claim to be a hotspot of biodiversity. He marveled at the exquisite beauty of the bird.

… The delicious mojito that I gulped down with lunch had sufficiently numbed my poor, sore butt enough that getting back on the bike caused no pain. But first we had to explore the good habitat of the ex-golf course from the paved trails and there was no better way to do that then by bike. Joining this story a bit late?

Returning to my car with sore knees and altitude wheeze, I decided to try a couple of the pulloffs on the road to the summit on the way back. And of course, they were over 5000 feet up in the Smokies. The namesake mountains were especially smoky on this day, so the view wasn’t even that great. They were bulkier and bull-necked.

Rumor has it that the sorely-needed authoritative book on flycatchers is in the works…it can not be published quickly enough. 2) The internet has changed everything.

The two stories about New York City are personal favorites, of course. It’s a bit of a sore thumb, a well-known essay by a famous writer-who-is-also-a-birder in a collection of essays by new and experienced-but-as-well-known-as-they-should-be writers, and I wish Rogers had given some background on its placement here.

On the morning of day 4 at Nonggang, I had a sore throat but a covid test was negative, so birding continued … For the Black-crested Bulbul , eBird remarks that its “pale eyes give it a perpetually angry or surprised appearance” I guess I would be angry too if I was permanently compared to Elvis Presley.
