Like Kapiti the island is an offshore refuge for many species extinct on the mainland, with a lot of the work being done by the voluntary Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi. It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. Birders know that the light’s not always perfect or even particularly good when you’re trying to tell one species from another. In the only state in the Central Flyway that protects cranes from hunting. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism.

We were driving up to northwestern Michigan from our homes in Ohio (me) and West ByGod Virginia (Geoff) in search of a bird species that would be a lifer for both of us: the Bohemian Waxwing. A wide-open field in a wind-protected spot, recently visited by both mechanical and living manure-spreaders. This was Snow Bunting heaven.
