At the end of last summer, I had to make a business trip to Denver, Colorado. Another former military complex, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Reserve has very few rocky mountains in it, but it does have two herds of American Bison , at least one Striped Skunk , a lot of deer and an amazing number of birds (278 species in eBird).

It is mid-March and I am back in Colorado for meetings. The same Townsend’s Solitaire I dipped on last time in Colorado. We also saw Prairie Dogs , Bison , Mule Deer , Abert’s Squirrel and Coyote. Of course, excellent opportunity to go birding with my friends Brad and Laura. the trails were empty.

Living in Colorado, I was practically next door neighbors to a Spix’s Macaw, “Presley,” who was discovered in an Evergreen living room—the only known Spix’s Macaw in the United States—and who was repatriated to Brazil before I even knew he existed. Ellen Kessler, like many birders the world over, would like to see a Spix’s Macaw.
