Yes, statistics show that there is a high level of violence in Mexico, but all of our experience suggests that this violence is almost entirely between rival criminal elements. I’m sure this rule is as true in Borneo, Colombia, central Africa, or even Central Park, as it is in Mexico. I have never seen a gun fired here.

This bird, of the Turdus family, can be found on the western slopes of Ecuador and Colombia. This was a very interesting experience with quick breaths, speeding heartbeats, and a few tense moments of not being able to photograph the bird due to fog.

Looking at a photo of a dozen birders on a Colombia tour, it stroke me that they were either using binoculars or cameras. Yet, going through the pages of a book is an irreplaceable experience. Not a single one was using a scope. How about a notebook vs. eBird, Merlin or iNaturalist?

On a recent filming trip with Tropical Birding in Ecuador I had the awesome experience of getting up close and personal with two bizarre manakin species. This bird is a Choco endemic found only in northwest Ecuador and southwest Colombia. These are just a few of the questions that come to mind when watching these bizarre little birds.

The same can be said about the population in Colombia and Ecuador so this could end up being a future, three-way split. Ochre-breasted Antpitta : Ok, I have to admit that I’m less sure about this one being different from the taxa often seen by birders in Mindo, Colombia, and Peru. This is what the woodhaunter sounds like in the Amazon.

I photographed this Guianan Cock-of-the-rock at a lek site near Surama, deep in the rainforest zone of Guyana, and my incredible experience with Andean Cock-of-the-rocks was at a display lek on the edge of the town of Jardin, in the coffee-belt of Colombia, both just incredible birds that make the heart soar with joy!

But at any rate, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that was just incomparable; I hope I never repeat it, but was glad to have had it happen, just to enjoy the amazing encounter and horror movie–type buzz.
