The associated bird species seek out drongos, apparently relying upon them heavily for protection. The species is classified as Near Threatened for all the usual depressing reasons – pollution, drainage, hunting, and the collection of eggs and nestlings ( source ).

Anyway, one of the babblers of Sepilok is the Bornean Black-capped Babbler – the result of a split of the Black-capped Babbler (well, at least from a human perspective – the birds themselves are probably quite nonchalant about it). At Sepilok, it can be hard to avoid taking photos of some non-birds, such as primates.

However, the lockdown forces me to go deeper and deeper into my photo collection, if I want to write anything at all. On a side note, the bird is also kind of ugly, so maybe the chicks never seeing their father has a certain protective function. And that seems to be the only vaguely satisfying thing left to do at the moment.

Second, reading about birds courting and parenting brings out the tendency to identify, which leads directly to anthropomorphism, the tendency to assign birds human emotions and thoughts. Think of birds too much as humans and you lose the specialness that makes them birds. And of eggs and nests and birds on nests. But special.

An African Penguin peers protectively around its fluffy chick. The early threats of guano harvesting and egg collecting have been replaced by the more ominous threats of oil pollution and overfishing of their favorite food source – pilchards.
