The Olympic Peninsula is known for a host of endemic creatures, including some mammals like the Roosevelt Elk. One creature that I almost overlooked as just another chipmunk is the Olympic Chipmunk , known to scientists and Latin enthusiasts as Tamias amoenus caurinus , a subspecies of the Yellow-pine Chipmunk Tamias amoenus.

While eating lunch with Daisy and her family at a picnic area in Joshua Tree National Park the other day a small chipmunk-looking creature ventured out of the rock formation we were eating next to. The cute little critter was clearly looking for a handout which we did not provide.

The big stars are still the birds, but there are more mammals and butterflies, as well as other insects – and I do appreciate a person who can see the aesthetic value in a housefly.

One of Desi’s favorite things to do when we are visiting his grandparents is wander around the yard looking for bugs, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals – basically, anything living thing. But what we found hiding amid the Black-eyed Susans on Sunday was clearly his favorite creature of the year.

Lots of squirrels, chipmunks, deer, rabbits. but that's pretty much it for mammals. the last part is raptor behavior but I can't imagine what kind of bird would be small enough to choose this space when there's 300 yds of chain link fence right there, and I've yet to see a dead squirrel, rabbit or chipmunk.

And of course, way too many chipmunks and squirrels and raccoons and turtles to count. Birding Lizards Mammals Reptiles Trips animals' Much like Carrie’s recent experiences being hoodwinked by non-bird sources of birdy-sounding calls , I’ve had my share of animal encounters out in the field.
