Royal Shags and Tricky Parakeets: Birding Queen Charlotte Sound

So early in the morning we left Picton and headed out along Queen Charlotte Sound, getting the general tour and occasionally stopping to look at whatever we found. Marlborough Sounds has a pretty special endemic, the King Shag , a species that isn’t just endemic to New Zealand but endemic to just the Sounds.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of February 2021)

Common Goldeneye lives up to its name around here, but this weekend found its far less-common cousin, Barrow’s Goldeneye , hanging out with Redheads and scaup at Charlotte Pier. At least that’s where I added this species to my New York list.

When not climbing, he collected species, and thus a number of birds are named after him. While the Bornean Forktail looks quite similar to the White-crowned Forktail, it apparently is a separate species, making it another Borneo endemic. The Latin species name of the Penan Bulbul is ruficrissus.

Escape to the Sounds

This scraggly collection of islands and deep long bays forms the tip of South Island closest to to North Island, but till this point my only experience of the area had been the long passage down Queen Charlotte Sound to reach the ferry terminal of Picton. The Littel Big Year – Week 45: Wrapping up the Bahamas

The return home included a total of 5 ½ hours of flight delays, one missed flight, and we subsequently missed the entire town of Charlotte, North Carolina. By the time we had ended our visit on the island, I had racked up a total of 58 birds species, with 27 of them new birds on the Little Big Year list. Bahamas Species – 58.

In any case, our hang-ups with vultures clearly stem from our own issues rather than any inherently bizarre trait of the species themselves. Vultures famously feed on carrion. Dead things. New World Vultures.

I and the Bird: What is an Ibis?

The group has a worldwide distribution; 28 species living and two additional extinct. Both extinct species were island-dwelling and flightless, suggesting a propensity of the group to disperse over long distances , a characteristic that any birder in late summer is familiar with.
