Let us think of the more moral members of society as a moral elite, much as the generality of scientists form a scientific elite. I hope I do not need to stress that such a moral elite must not be confused with a social or intellectual elite. I am myself not so heroic. I eat eggs though they may come from battery hens.

If beef cattle who could not feel pain were developed, then it would be permissible to eat them. Why should microorganisms be sacrificed rather than humans?

Heron/Egret medley (yes, I know medleys suck, but without the aural component, they might just be ok): Black-crowned Night-heron … … Cattle Egret … … Chinese Pond Heron. Surprisingly (at least from a biased human perspective), 97% of the deserters are female ( source ).

Some people actually don’t consider human beings as animals. Some people think humans are superior to all other life forms. Thank God most human beings have developed a more modern view of wildlife and acknowledge that some animals display sufficient consciousness and self-awareness to deserve moral consideration.

For example, if one could pick up shed animal legs in a pasture in which animals roam freely among their own kind, there might be no moral objection to eating the legs. Suppose someone enjoys drinking the blood of cattle and hogs.
