Queens Big Day (Kind of)

A quick stop at the beach netted me some beach-nesting birds and then I did a quick tour of some woodland parks, Alley Pond Park and Oakland Lake. Though I have been unable to prove it, I am convinced that these Northern Harriers are breeding at Edgemere Landfill. Green Herons are surprisingly easy to miss in Queens on a big day.

One or two Tufted Ducks show up at Lake Merritt in Oakland every year, with this drake in particular often lending itself for soul-satisfying views. Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA. Gull-billed Terns breed in south San Diego Bay, along with Black Skimmers and several other tern species. The Bay Area. Fall through spring.

Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA. Some birds breed in flocks, at least in part to avoid predation. I don’t believe in perpetual optimism (I’m just not wired for it), but I think it will do you good in this situation. Other flocks don’t come off as being so homogeneous.
