The Latin species name of the Kalij Pheasant is leucomelanos , meaning “white” (leukos) and “black” (melanos, both Greek words). This turned out to be nice for one researcher who thus could do the research for her Ph.D. New Jersey. thesis – as she did – is a bit much though.

Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the “Rufa” population of Red Knot ( Calidris canutus rufa ) as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
