Like many humans, it is presumed to be monogamous (source: HBW). The US company NE Pigeon Supplies presumably is involved in supplying materials to keep and breed pigeons. Still, a weird and uncomfortably human-centric way of categorizing bird species, if you ask me, which I am pretty sure you will not.

Laughing at you, not with you

The Blue-crowned Laughingthrush (Wuyuan) is listed as Critically Endangered, as there are only about 250-280 birds spending the breeding season in Northeastern Jiangxi (and according to the HBW, it is not clear where they spend the non-breeding period). And of course, I would have been wrong.

The Pittas of Sepilok

Well – I only saw two species, the most common ones at Sepilok, Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia. One study found that there seems to be some work sharing among the breeding adults – the male had a higher visitation rate of the nest while the female was the only one that brooded. Humanity is overrated.

I saw it in a park in Delhi, and indeed the HBW remarks that it “has adapted well to human habitation, and is common and widespread in the parks and gardens of cities such as Delhi” (I once had a visitor from India here in Shanghai, and he asked me if/why there are no birds in Shanghai. ” Not a bad description, for once.

Hornbills of Sabah

Another item they feed on is hunting edible bird nest swiftlets, which are quite common in edible swiftlet houses in Sabah, Malaysia ( source ). One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars. Now pairs of hornbills feed outside this correspondent’s window”.

So–the book covers islands that belong to the Republic of Indonesia and to Malaysia. But, it doesn’t cover all or Indonesia or all of Malaysia. Does the fact that this guide doesn’t include all of Indonesia or Malaysia mean that a birder going to these countries will have to invest in multiple field guides?
