Well, it is that time of year again and shorebirds are breeding. Hopefully all of the migratory shorebirds that left Roebuck Bay earlier this year have been successful at breeding in the Northern Hemisphere and will soon be heading back to our shores. Family footprints. Constantly looking upwards.

A few weeks ago we decided to go and see if the resident Pied Oystercatchers at Eighty Mile Beach had been successful at breeding this season. The bill also has a dark tip.

This past Saturday afternoon I was out on the beach in the Rockaways with my family. Royal Terns are interesting to me as a New York state birder as they are exclusively coastal and almost entirely a bird we see in fall after they disperse from their breeding grounds. The colony has grown supporting up to 3 pairs of owls, all breeding at once! The colony has numbered 17 at one point and fledged as many as 9 owlets during the normal breeding season. The owl couple on the live camera feed is the youngest breeding pair in the colony and are a little over a year old.

They used Great T**s from non-urban and urban areas, and mixed them up through breeding, to rule out any possible family history of telomere length. Telomeres are repetitive sequences of genetic material sitting at the ends of genes.

When we returned recently to check on our Tawny Frogmouth nest , which became a Tawny Frogmouth family, we were delighted to hear the sound of Varied Lorikeets as soon as we opened the vehicle doors.

The story of the cahow, a “Lazurus species” that was thought to be extinct for over 300 years and then discovered to be breeding on a tiny remote island in Bermuda, is part of modern birding legend. In 1951, there were 18 breeding pairs of cahows discovered on three tiny islands. She uses both sources well.

An Eared Grebe in breeding plumage should be enough to get you to the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve all by itself. You would certainly not see an American Avocet in the middle of the desert without water being present.
