This year we have continued to monitor the breeding of several pairs of Pied Oystercatchers along the coast in Broome from Gantheaume Point to Willie Creek on the south side. They breed on a number of basaltic lakes in southwestern Argentina, and it is not entirely clear where they all winter, but some wintering Hooded Grebes have been found outside their breeding range (and a few none-breeding birds have been found year round at two locations on the Atlantic, apparently).

Fortunately, just like when we visited Washington State , Daisy was amenable to taking a boat ride to see some puffins so on the evening of Saturday, 27 May, we (me, Daisy, Desi, and my mother-in-law) found ourselves on a boat in New Harbor watching Black Guillemots swim in the harbor while we waited for our boat to head out to Eastern Egg Rock.

Once again Pied Oystercatcher breeding season is fast approaching in Broome and we can expect the first batch of eggs to be laid within the next few weeks. It is estimated that there were more than 1000 Great Bustards in the northern lowlands of Serbia at the beginning of the 20th century, but back then these birds were also present in the south and the east of the country. Habitat destruction combined with hunting has pushed them away from their former breeding grounds. Lots of it.

I have followed the breeding activity of the Pied Oystercatchers in Broome along Cable Beach since July 2000 when I found the first nest site and the birds have continued to use the same territories, though there have been some partner changes. I can also monitor any movement along the coast during the year when they are no longer breeding.

We have had a very poor breeding season for our resident shorebirds and in particular none of the 16 pairs of Pied Oystercatchers along the 23 kilometre/14 miles stretch of coast that we keep an eye on have successfully bred. All of the migratory shorebirds had started to leave Broome and it appeared it had also gone north.

Sadly it has been a poor season so far and the Pied Oystercatchers are currently on their second attempt at breeding. All of the pairs that we monitor have lost either their eggs or juvenile birds to predation before they were fledged and are patiently sitting once again on a new clutch of eggs.

It is present both in Broome itself and also surrounding ephemeral lakes and appears to breed throughout the year if the conditions are right. They will sit tight on the eggs even if you are within a few metres of the nest and are very reluctant to move.

Over the last weekend, I was at Lake Kissimmee in Florida, observing Snail Kites at an area kites were not present or rare just a few years ago. Native snails lay 20-50 eggs at a time during the spring. Exotic snails lay 300-500 eggs at a time, lay eggs throughout the year, and are more resistant to environmental changes.

Among birds the Egyptian Vulture uses rocks to crack Ostrich eggs, the New Caledonian Crow and Woodpecker Finch (one of several Darwin Finches of the Galapagos Islands), uses sticks to extract grubs from inside a branch. Egyptian Vultures raised is isolation used rocks to crack eggs presented to them. The behavior was inherent.

The birds are not allowed to breed on the runway, but many loaf around on it. Around 100,000 of these terns breed on almost every available space on the island, and walking through groups of them is a deafening and quite painful experience. We discovered another juvenile not far away, so other species have had their eggs swapped out. Now a birthday present is nice, but sometimes nature can do so much better and Grant thinks I did well this year! There are wild dogs present and these are not the dingo, but a dog that was also brought to Australia by Europeans in 1788 and has spread throughout the country. Our 23 kilometre stretch of beach that runs from Gantheaume Poin t to Willie Creek has finally seen the arrival of the first Pied Oystercatcher chicks for the 2016 breeding season. This pair of birds laid eggs in the first week of July, which is typical for the Broome area. Pied Oystercatcher nest with 2 eggs.
