Pileated Woodpeckers take BBOTW honors quite often around here, but who can resist the captivating sight of an adult teaching two big, gangly juveniles the finer points of extracting nutrients from decaying logs?

Laurent Fournier Mar 17th, 2011 at 11:49 am Would the white throated sparrow qualify for this? Laurent, I cannot find anything on White-throated Sparrows being polygynandrous.

Migration hasn’t really kicked in, the breeders aren’t tied to breeding territories any more, and it is hot and sweaty outside. Sparrows are missing; wood-warblers vamoose. Tanagers, woodpeckers, gnatcatchers – missing! Nothing is quite as much of a downer to a birder than the summer doldrums.
