Andalucia’s City-Slicker Falcons

10,000 Birds

I wasn’t confident that I would find any birds at all in early February, but though numbers were small at each site, several individuals were present, and there were noisy territorial displays, despite the absence of females. The hovering is generally for shorter periods than that of Common Kestrels, with less wing flapping.

15 Australian Birds (Episode 1)

10,000 Birds

Though I usually do not mention this in public presentations, as kids (or fathers) might be present in the audience. So, as a preemptive strike, I present to you the Golden-headed Cisticola. On a side note, the bird is also kind of ugly, so maybe the chicks never seeing their father has a certain protective function.

The Fate of the Florida Anis

10,000 Birds

Smooth-billed Anis were relative newcomers as breeders to Florida, having only begun nesting since the 1930s. Significant amounts of habitat along Krome Avenue in western Miami-Dade as well as Everglades National Park remain, but even the colonies present at Anhinga Trail and Eco Pond have disappeared — a true mystery.

Heronry at Sultanpur

10,000 Birds

Helpless chicks in the nest and free-flying juveniles were present during my visit at the beginning of December. It was thought that later nests with smaller clutches were either replacement clutches from a failed nest or from low-quality breeders. The storks begin to arrive from August and will usually be sitting on eggs by October.
