Faithful Loons and Human Lunacy

10,000 Birds

I strongly suspect that the rate of attrition on this Loon family is inversely proportionate to the abundance of ducklings in the bay. Because Loons’ coastal wintering habitats can be severely impacted by oil spills and other human activities, this information has important implications for wildlife managers.

Birding Ruili, Yunnan

10,000 Birds

Fortunately for human males, the typical courtship of humans differs from that of the Coppersmith Barbets , which the HBW describes as follows: “When the nest is ready, the male may begin courtship feeding, offering fruit to the female. Not a great situation given the chronic housing shortage in suitable environments.

An Affront to the Idea of Family

Animal Person

I'm not one of those people who thinks family is composed of only humans or humans who are biologically related. The idea of family is currently being used by the dairy industry in a series of commercials with the tag line: "99% of dairy farms are family owned." Ninety-nine percent of dairy farms are family owned.

Birding Tongbiguan, Yunnan (part 1)

10,000 Birds

Don’t you love it when blog post writers split topics that do not interest you in the first place into two separate parts? Of course, the same applies to pizza services for humans. Welcome to Birding Tongbiguan, part 1. eBird calls the Asian Green Bee-eater a “small, dainty bee-eater”, which sounds nice and peaceful.

Birding around Chaka, Qinghai, China

10,000 Birds

The Ala Shan Redstart (which I will not call Przevalski’s Redstart, see my juvenile rants about the evil Mr Przevalski in earlier editions of this blog) is a very attractive bird and – as many attractive birds – listed as Near Threatened. Finally, always good to end a blog post with a vulture as a gentle memento mori.

Baihualing – The Trequel

10,000 Birds

I was looking for a title for this third part of a blog post on the birds of Baihualing, and thought that the made-up term “Trequel” would sound fitting. Somewhat confusingly, its Latin species name is boulboul – a word that stands for nightingale but of course is also the name of a large bird family, the bulbuls.

Birding Fuzhou National Forest Park

10,000 Birds

Being of a much purer mind than most male humans, I cannot find anything amusing about the name of the Japanese Tit. Large Woodshrikes are neither members of the shrike family, nor large (MacKinnon: “smallish grey and white”), nor made of wood. If you disagree, maybe you should find a blog post about monster trucks.
