It was here that I discovered my first White Ibis, my first Eastern Towhee, my first Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher , and while these species may be “common” to me now they filled me with wonder then. A Green Heron stood stock-still as we passed, blending in with the raised oyster beds recently exposed by the retreating tidal waters.

After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”. In New Zealand, the Spotted Dove is an introduced species.

Leeds Castle’s most showy “blackbird” is the Jackdaw , Corvus monedula. Strangely, the Indian Peafowl is not mentioned on eBird’s Hotspot list which shows the 67 species that have been seen there. A few other remnants of the former collections might raise eyebrows in some circles.

That’s pretty amazing–Bolivia has more bird species than India! The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. The guide covers 1,433 species, the number of birds documented at the end of 2014, the cutoff point for the book.

The boat trip also offered some good looks at the Yellow-headed Blackbirds nesting along the shores. Like the breeding activity of many species this spring, the grebes were late, probably due to the unseasonable weather. Note the raised crests as the female (on the left) turns to face the larger male (on the right).

Lately, I have been waking up to the vocal antics of Laughing Falcon , the newly split Gray-cowled Wood-Rail , Grayish Saltator , Melodious Blackbird , and this beautiful male Blue Grosbeak that sings about a block away. Numbers were impressive, especially because that euphonia species isn’t the commonest of birds in Costa Rica.
