Birding Southeastern Washington (McNary NWR)

Part of the mitigation for the McNary Dam was the creation of McNary National Wildlife Refuge. Fish and Wildlife Service : Established in 1956, McNary NWR was created to replace wildlife habitat lost to construction of the McNary Dam downstream. There were many other species of waterfowl, including a large number of Ruddy Ducks.

Butte Valley Wildlife Area and Meiss Lake

A few weeks ago I led a field trip to Butte Valley Wildlife Area. It was a destination I had never experienced so I made a few phone calls and got some information from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife agent who actually runs both the Butte Valley and the Shasta Valley Wildlife Areas, which are about 25 miles apart.

Little Big Year – Week 35: Route 66, Tucumcari and The Albuquerque area

American Kestrels, Cooper Hawks , and Northern Harriers also found the hunting here to their liking. This did open up the area to a few new species, like this Wilson’s Warbler. I counted about 600 of them, along with a few Red-wing Blackbirds and about 50-75 Yellow-headed Blackbirds.

Duck Migration

Mostly the ducks were Red-breasted Merganser and Greater Scaup , the two most prevalent species on the pond, but there were a few other birds mixed in as well. Either way, it was a heck of a sight and another example of why Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is the best place in New York City to see amazing wildlife spectacles.

Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge, 15 March 2009 It was at about 1:30 AM on Saturday morning that I startled awake and found myself sitting in an empty subway car in an unfamiliar location. But Red-winged Blackbirds weren’t the only birds that returned in numbers. Needless to say, I was a bit groggy when I met up with them.

We worship birds, we hunt birds, we protect birds, and, yes, we eat birds. As they say, the relationship is complicated.
