The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. This bird is represented in an ancient Egyptian hieroglyph. Can’t say that it is a particularly obvious name from seeing the bird.

I spent the early morning hours the last two days on the beach in the eastern Rockaways, taking advantage of slanted light and cooperative birds. It literally tossed it in the air several times as it tried to separate the meat from the shell. Semipalmated Plovers , like this young bird, were all over the beach.

It is not an easy task trying to photograph a White-bellied Sea-Eagle as it soars along the coast, so when you discover one sat in a tree enjoying lunch it enables you to focus on everything that is magnificent about this bird of prey. The nests that they build are huge and consist of large sticks generally close to water.

And while finding snails is not difficult for a long legged bird that is not afraid to wade into alligator-infested marshes it is difficult to extract the yummy snail meat from its protective shell.
