When I studied the Efe Pygmies of the Congo, I discovered (and yes, it was me who discovered this amazing fact everyone now knows) that the Efe organize their space in elongated linear trails. Many families or individuals live in the Twin Cities and have a cabin up north. Which reminds me of something funny about Minnesota.

Crested Firebacks

While you can easily find drab representatives of the pheasant family across most of the world – dull uninteresting birds like partridges, quail, francolins, grouse, or, God help you, turkeys, pheasants are usually found only in Asia. But still, had I not seen a pitta a few minutes later it might have been my bird of the year.

This time it is the Old World that has misnamed a group of birds, or in fact several groups. It all comes back to a split in one of the great bird families, the Turdidae, or thrushes. Once upon a time, when I started birding, this great family included a wide range of species collectively known as the robins and chats.

The Bee-eaters of Africa

The wonderful family Meropidae contains 27 dazzling species, of which Africa is endowed with no less than 20 species, the balance occurring across Asia and with one as far afield as Australia. Besides being colorful and energetic, another plus of these lovely birds is that they are relatively easy to track down.
