In port, the local rehabilitators thought it would be best for her to treated closer to her home, at a facility dedicated to aquatic birds. I happened to work at that facility, for International Bird Rescue at the Los Angeles Oiled Bird Care and Education Center , part of the Oiled Wildlife Care Network.

Jodi Swenson of Massachusett’s Cape Ann Wild Bird Rescue released a crow named Odin, who occasionally still appears at her open window. The nighttime version of this occurred at Louise Shimmel’s Cascades Raptor Center in Oregon, when her education director took their Barn Owl to the flight cage for some exercise.

Some feed stores try to sell the ducklings as educational projects for kids over the summer. Some rehabbers even have surrogate ducks or geese that they can raise a lone chick with and teach it to survive. Never raise a wild goose or duckling yourself.
