I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. It seems that this is another species for which the standard phrase of scientists anywhere, “more research needed”, applies.

We are facing a plague of poaching that is again decimating the species. In Africa, one elephant is being killed every 15 minutes. One may say so. Perhaps 15 minutes?

In all that swirling of swallows, I am not certain was there a third species, so I keep watching. The forest grows on the new lakeshore and it, too, is a mere 15 years old, but already provides an important corridor for large mammals such as Roe Deer and even Brown Bears , which sometimes come down to feed on beans.
