So Eduardo set aside the afternoon to show me some of the city, and take me birding in two city parks. Being a westerner — raised in California, and now living in western Mexico — I was perhaps most excited about the migratory birds that breed in eastern North America. Two other birds, both residents, surprised us.

A Quick Visit to a Mud Puddle

But after a couple of exciting visits to mud puddles, which long-time readers of this blog will remember is one of my favorite kinds of birding , I couldn’t resist sharing a few shots of the birds I’ve seen coming in for a drink and a bath. Birds can come in for a meal and a drink! And so pretty! Expect more soon!

The Oriolest Oriole

In North America, at least in the eastern part of it, we celebrate the return of the Baltimore Oriole to parks and farms this time of year. Icterus galbula is a handsome bird, to be sure. Baltimore Orioles are surprisingly slight when you get a look at them, but troupials are about the size of a jay, and with the bearing to go with it.

Another (Almost) Big Day in Queens

A week ago this past Friday I did a Queens Big Day in that I spent the whole day birding across a variety of parks in Queens looking for birds. I didn’t plan it well and I was mostly just enjoying birding my favorite borough for the entire day. Birding, it’s dangerous ! So, this past Friday, I did it again.

The trend at this time of year is a downturn in shared lists and birds reported, nevertheless, 12 (is this a record?) Our two newest contributors have shared from Mexico and China, bringing the countries birded this month (also including; Costa Rica, Greece, Serbia, USA, UK, India, UAE and New Zealand) to 10.
