Bald Eagle Catching and Eating a Blue-winged Teal

Back in January, when I was enjoying my attendance at the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival down in Florida, I had an enchanting encounter with our national bird , the Bald Eagle. Such was the case with the Bald Eagle that I spotted. Also, note the eagle’s nictating membranes protecting its eyes from damage.

Red-throated Loon off the Coast of Maine

Despite the relatively warm (but still well below freezing) temperatures birds were few and farm between, but we spotted a Bufflehead, a Long-tailed Duck, a Horned Grebe, a Bald Eagle , and a smattering of both Common Loons and Red-breasted Mergansers. The Common Loon look-alike bird remained a mystery.

However – and I am not saying this out of misplaced national pride – there is one bird in the Netherlands that proves Jefferson wrong and Buffon right: the White-tailed Eagle (or Sea Eagle ). It’s the only Dutch eagle. Our eagle makes Baldy look imparfait, even a bit manqué. So it was this day.
