This weekend, we all enjoyed the sight of a Bald Eagle perched in a farm field along the highway, an uncommon spot for an uncommonly charismatic avian. Three owls, Common Eiders , Lesser Black-backed Gulls , an Orange-crowned Warbler , a wide variety of dabbling ducks: the list goes on and on!

As an adult Bald Eagle and a first of the season flock of Tree Swallows flew overhead, several birds were cleaning up underneath the feeders. The ranch’s ponds yielded several Ring-necked Ducks … large numbers of American Wigeon … several Bufflehead … and Pied-billed Grebes.

As a duck hunter, he had seen Redheads and scaups and mergansers throughout the winter, but as I did not relish getting up at 3:30 a.m. Binoculars turned towards the water, I spotted Common Loons, Horned Grebes , and Bufflehead as we walked, Brown P elicans , a juvenile Bald Eagle, and Ring-billed Gulls soaring past us overhead.

American Coot and Common Gallinules paddled serenely in the canals nearest the road, occasionally mixing with flocks of Ring-necked Ducks and Northern Shovelers. Large flocks of ibis flew directly across the road, and Northern Harriers, Bald Eagles, and Red-tailed Hawks patrolled the skies.

Raptors and other predatory birds have largely rebounded, and there seems to be be no shortage of Brown Pelicans, Peregrine Falcons and Bald Eagles. A curious Laysan Duck takes a stroll at Midway Atoll. Although Laysan Duck is a Hawaiian bird, most birders have never heard of it. That would have been awful.

The only time that the joyous chaos of the coot flock is wielded in one common goal is when the resident Bald Eagles take flight and every single individual skitters away a short distance, as if the difference between free coot and eagle food is about 20 feet of waterspace. Nearly 800 acres of wetlands and tidal flats provide diverse habitat for the local birds, as well as large numbers of migratory species, including thousands of ducks and geese. At one point, standing in the middle of one of the first dikes, I was able to spot 17 Bald Eagles , a Peregrine Falcon , two American Kestrels , and Northern Harrier.

A singing Red-eyed Vireo , a flock of Wood Ducks , a Gray Catbird mewing from the bushes, a flyover Belted Kingfisher , and Greater Scaup flying past on the ocean all kept our tally rising. Sure enough, it was just to our north harrying a…wait, that’s a Bald Eagle ! Species number 81!

Anthony had spotted the bird back in the reeds and announced it only to see a Wood Duck swim out. But I included a Wood Duck for scale! Time went past. Much happiness and celebration ensued!

This cold weather and snow does not seem to have much effect on the huge number of ducks and geese, but the smaller song birds, all seem to wake up much later in the days, and only after it has warmed up a bit.
