According to the distribution map , their migration takes them as far south as Argentina, but decidedly less common in central and eastern South America. This time, I was able to spend about ten minutes with this bird, closely observing it as it hunted from branch to branch, from tree to tree. Yellow-billed Cuckoo. I’m in love.

Scanning the skies for Zone-tailed hawks

Last week I wrote about the interesting hunting habits of our local Harris’s Hawks. There is a small population in Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and northern Argentina. Today I will cover another one of Mexico’s Baja Peninsulas characters, the Zone-tailed Hawk Buteo Albonotatus.

Swainson’s Hawk Splendor

She flew overhead glancing down from time to time as Buteos do when hunting. Argentina is calling and the fall migration will soon be underway. The female then showed up and flew by quickly but calmly, surveying the scene and showcasing those pointy wings which long distant migrants seem to favor.

Buff-breasted Sandpipers in Riverhead, Long Island

Their decline is largely believed to be as a result of conversion of their wintering and staging grounds to agriculture, though their historic decline from numbering in the millions to numbering in the thousands was because of hunting. What great little birds!

Birdwatching Santiago de Chile Part-2

We reached the edge of the hillside and a large group of ground birds flushed in front of us making lots of noise which attracted the hunting hawks; they flew over our heads looking to catch something in this chicken-run type of escape. Here is my first shot at this Chilean Hawk with my 840 mm set up. Chilean Hawk Juvenile.
