Some are saying that President Obama broke his promise to get a rescue dog. Bo is not really a rescue dog. Ted Kennedy gave him to the Obamas as an act of friendship. We would have loved it if the Obamas had adopted a dog from a shelter. I think we animal people should just chill and enjoy the new puppy.

Here's a great question I received via direct message on Twitter ( www.twitter.com/mary_martin ): "Do you think that even if Obama had adopted a shelter dog-it still may have caused a run on breeders? Perhaps if there were a heartfelt message followed by action that supported it, no matter what breed were rescued, adoptions would increase.

They can say that the puppy was needing to be re-homed, therefore it's like adopting from a rescue group. But I didn't campaign for a presidential greyhound for exactly the same reason Obama's decision was disappointing: it glorifies pure breed dogs.
