Next door to my hometown, the Gulf Breeze Zoo occupies 50 acres near the Santa Rosa Sound. The Canada Goose sits on its nest of pine cones. The nest sat perilously close to a set of narrow train tracks, which guided an equally small train packed full of little kids and their parents to get a closer view of some of the animals.

We've written about the Calgary Zoo here before. To many people, the number of animal fatalities at the Calgary Zoo in newer years seemed very high. A hippo passed away following a long, horrible transfer from another zoo. Woodyer wanted Lanthier to quit and for the zoo’s accreditation to be taken away.

Lanthier, a veterinarian and walrus researcher who took the helm in Calgary two years ago, says the cancellation of the polar bears exhibit might please some animal-rights extremists, but the reality is a blow to Canada's white bears.

Not only is Toronto closing its elephant exhibit, but the City Council voted to send the remaining elderly elephants to the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) sanctuary instead of another zoo. This is excellent news.
