Controversial Elephant Death at San Diego Zoo

Umoya, a 21-year-old African elephant, died Thursday, possibly due to injuries suffered during an attack by another elephant. PETA and In Defense of Animals oppose keeping elephants in zoos.

There is no philosophical continuum, but there is a psychological continuum, as evidenced by everyone at the workshop taking steps back or forward, denoting their increase in animal use (including no meat to meat, or backsliding, like I did a decade ago), or their decrease (such as when vegetarians go vegan).

Andean Condors On The News

Later it was determined these condors suffered from organophosphate poisoning after they were exposed to insecticides used for agriculture. Andean condors are vultures and feed exclusively on “carrion” dead animals. It is true that condors eat dead animals. Another sick condor and two dead ones were found nearby.

In a unanimous decision, New Jersey’s Supreme Court rejected a broad challenge by animal protection advocates to the state’s rules on the care of farmed animals) but struck down regulations that regard husbandry practices as being “humane” merely because they are routine.

Dutch May Ban Kosher Slaughter of Livestock

This could halt production of kosher and halal meat in the Netherlands – and lead to similar campaigns in other European countries. However, Jewish and Islamic groups which can prove animals do not suffer more during ritual killing than in an ordinary slaughterhouse will be able to apply for permits.
