The travel agent mentioned I had a 2 hour layover in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. I was flying Emirates and that was the hub. Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters are something of a speciality, breeding here before flying off to Africa for the winter. It was actually a moment’s impulse.

South Africa: The Gotcha Award. United Arab Emirates: No Bird Award. I failed to see a Southern Black Bustard on my last visit to West Coast National Park near Cape Town. So what did I do? I hired a guide to find one for me and I saw it. I never left the airport on my 13 hour layover and never saw a bird.
