Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park is the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa – it was established in 1895. In terms of breeding behavior, starlings are a diversified group – some use helpers, others do not. It is thus much older than the Hold Steady song “ Heavy Covenant “, which was only released in 2021.

The Rose-ringed Parakeets of Heidelberg

The Rose-ringed Parakeet naturally occurs in two isolated areas: a thin strip across Africa just south of the Sahara, and south Asia where it is mostly found in India with smaller ranges in adjacent countries. Heidelberg Zoo to the south-west of Neuenheimer Feld, all over the place but most often at the seals enclosure and the adjacent kiosk.

White Stork in New York

That seems highly unlikely though, as White Storks don’t even like flying across the Mediterranean on their migrations back and forth between Africa and Eurasia. It seems likely that this individual bird was an escape from a local zoo, as has already been theorized on the New York State listserv.
