Still, the pandemic made it harder for us to bird together, and it wasn’t until this month that I was finally able to repay his “good turn” by taking him there. Twice now he has conjured one up in places where I never manage to see them. With 85 species in 6 hours, I’d like to think it was well repaid.

These are the birds that make us race to the nearest park, scan refuge headquarter trees with anxious eyes, and turn some of us into temporary paparazzi. In May of the north, these handsomely patterned little birds migrate into town and entertain us with song and fresh, vibrant colors.

For some reason, thi s Grey-streaked Flycatcher reminds me of Patrick Stickles from the US band Titus Andronicus. I guess the whole point about this band name is to suggest -ironically, of course – utter blandness. The HBW also has some interesting details about the Grey Heron. I like the pose of this White-winged Tern.

About mid-morning a group of Boy Scouts arrived with plans to do some work on the platform, including repainting it. A negotiation ensued, and they agreed to do work that would not require us to leave the platform, and to paint the stairs leading up the hill to the platform instead of the platform itself. Odd, but true.

Since most of the rain happened the evening of the 8th and the following morning, many sites had good weather on the morning of October Global Big Day and because of that, local birders still managed to identify well over 700 species in Costa Rica (!). My guide, Chirag Solanki, told me he had once been searching here for five days, before he managed to locate the birds. The year was 2012, January 2012, and in the entire Kutch District, it was estimated that there were only about two dozen birds left. He asks if the wind generators can influence the bird numbers? But let us start with a few positive aspects. The book has bird names in English, Latin, Chinese, and Pinyin – very useful for somebody like me to communicate with local birders. This skulking species always manages to elude me. I did manage a photo of the male with an unobstructed view of his namesake red crown, but my focus landed on a stick that was in front of the bird. Putting that heavyset bill to use! While scanning the vegetation, I noticed a tiny flycatcher flitting about nearby.
