This all happened as I was suffering from the photographic affliction known as “light denial,” where I’m convinced there is still some light but sadly the day has ended and darkness reigns. I was flabbergasted and reminded that we don’t have exclusive rights to imagining, planning, executing, and then forgetting.

According to Couzens, after laying the eggs, females sometimes immediately abandon their first mate and pair up with another male. I gave up my US citizenship a few years ago and looking at recent events such as “Right vs. Wrong”, it was one of my better decisions. Sounds like clever behavior by the parrotbills, right?

I know about the common mistakes people make when they find young birds, assuming that because they’re on the ground with no other birds in sight they must be abandoned or in need of rescue. Even though I was too ignorant to identify the bird, the intake volunteer on the desk recognized him right away.

It's impersonal and hideously ugly and the animals suffer greatly. It's just not right. A violation of trust or confidence, an abandonment of something committed to one's charge. Their claim is that what has become the customary way to take sentient nonhumans from babyhood to untimely death is not humane. It's cruel.
