Perhaps the most curious thing about the Great Spotted Cuckoo is its distribution, for it is both a non-breeding Palearctic migrant to Africa, and a trans-Africa migrant. According to The Birds of Africa Volume III , “In much of the tropics present throughout the year, with breeding and non-breeding birds usually indistinguishable”.

Egg harvesting to sell as food was intensive then, with thousands taken annually from the breeding colonies in Chile. Egg collection for local consumption still continues at lower scale. Mining companies have established themselves adjacent to the flamingos’ nesting sites and feeding sites.

Paving of the road across the Reva Pond started and was abandoned several months later: only the sidewalk was paved. There’s enough scientific data collected already ( eBird illustrated checklist ), it is not as if we really need more. And most of my local patches, the best ones – at least, are not accessible by car any more.

Nitin hopes to enlarge his collection of photos of Tigers. Further down the road, we reach a derelict building with a large veranda hidden among the trees – an abandoned hunting lodge (if I were in a situation to invest, I would choose to upgrade this into a luxury wildlife lodge). One White-eyed Buzzard has turned its back to us.

The authors’ detailed delineation of problems with the accuracy of NYC breeding bird surveys or with the limits of historical writings may test a reader’s patience. Because, as this book demonstrates so well, it is sometimes important to look back in order to move forward. It’s a very mixed chapter.
