Distribution maps show the relative abundance of a species in the region and also indicate resident or visiting status.

An associated issue is that the Belize and Costa Rica guides share many of the same descriptions of species, written by Howell. Similarly, descriptions of species repeated across volumes do not lose their accuracy with each publication. Other species are splits and lumped and have had their names changed. Why are these issues?

I was surprised that this species is named for its vocalization – which sounds like laughter. For example, the Diamond Dove is the world’s second-smallest species of the columbidae order ( source ). The Latin species name haematonotus (“blood-backed”) sounds a bit more exciting but not necessarily more accurate.

I added several birds to my 2013 year list during my four day stay, including the Surfbird ( Aphriza virgata ). The Surfbird outside of the breeding season can be found along almost the entire Pacific Coast of the Americas, from southeastern Alaska all the way to Tierra del Fuego in southern Chile. Truly a West Coast species.

In 2014, the Florida Ornithological Society Records Committee (FOSRC) voted to add this species to the Florida state list. The ABA Checklist Committee quickly followed suit.

The northwestern spread of this non-native species made it to my yard a few years ago. The lightest shade of lavender coincides with a 0 – 2% frequency of sightings, the next darker shade 2 – 10%, the next 10 – 25%, the next 25 – 40% and the darkest (almost black) shade is a 40 – 100% occurrence of the species.

Even in the north of the country we can expect three or four species to arrive by the end of the month, generally Sandwich Tern, Northern Wheatear, Sand Martins and the first singing Chiffchaffs. Others weren’t so lucky with a few tide-line corpses found of species such as Long-eared Owl. Wheatear (from a warmer Spring).

We have finally arrived back home in Broome, but before we left Karratha in the Pilbara region of Western Australia we were lucky enough to see our first Banded Stilt Chladorhynchus leucocephalus for 2013. It is a species very rarely seen in the north, though they do wander and can show up in a variety of locations.

My visit to the best sewage ponds for birding on the island of Trinidad was on 19 July 2013. Phaetusa simplex is the only species in its genus and it seems very unlikely that it will be confused with another tern species. The Trincity Sewage Ponds in Trinidad and Tobago are no exception.

The Veliko Ratno Island birdlist is about 170 species long, of which more than 90 were observed from the Dorcol Promenade. Highlight species: Ferruginous Duck , Goosander , Red-breasted Merganser , Red-crested Pochard , Greater Scaup , Velvet Scoter , Black-throated Diver. In March and November, Common Cranes are a possibility.

For obvious reasons it has listed under “other names” in field guides “Zebra Duck” and it is easily identified from all other duck species in Australia by its distinct stripes. It is a species we have not seen in flight dispersing to a new location, but they often fly up and back down rather vocally if disturbed.
