Purina ONE® beyOnd® brand dog and cat food and GOOD have teamed up to host the Shine a Light on a Shelter challenge and award a $10,000 grant to an animal shelter doing great work. Rock & Rawhide , a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that aims to increase adoptions for dogs and cats in shelters by providing toys and other items that serve as a form of distraction therapy, reducing the stress and noise levels. This shelter has hundreds of dogs and cats coming and going on a daily basis and need our help!

We are excited to tell you about Animal Protective Association’s Harmony House for Cats new eco-friendly, net-zero cat shelter in Chicago! The grand opening for the new shelter will be on Sunday, July 8 from 2-6 pm at 2914 N Elston. Harmony House for Cats new Net Zero Energy shelter. It is free and open to the public.

Since their habitat has been destroyed, wildlife become displaced and must spend more time searching for food, water and shelter. This was the case in the 23,958 acre Reading Fire that burned in Lassen Volcanic National Park in 2012 where I photographed this Black-backed Woodpecker.

Even the narrow shade under a gate is a great place to seek shelter from the sun on a hot day. The first bird we came across was the Brown Songlark and this was my 143rd bird for 2012. Throw in a few hundred termite mounds and you have a great environment for birds.
