Rock & Rawhide , a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that aims to increase adoptions for dogs and cats in shelters by providing toys and other items that serve as a form of distraction therapy, reducing the stress and noise levels. Research has shown that if noise and stress are reduced, adoptions go up!

New volunteers, supporters and adopters are always welcome. Since 1970, Animal Protective Association’s Harmony House for Cats has rescued and rehabilitated stray and injured cats in a no-kill cageless environment. Opened in June 2012, the Eco-friendly Adoption Center showcases cats and kittens in Chicago’s greenest shelter.

And in the middle of a heatwave of the 2012 summer, I was heading to Sarajevo and Jahorina Mountain, a major venue of the 1984 Winter Olympics. A few days after my trip, a news item in the local media attracted my attention: near Sarajevo, a father and a son got killed while cutting firewood in a minefield. And I become a Birder.

For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. Texas and North Dakota together account for 88% of the total yearly kill of sandhill cranes. Tennessee found that out in January. But is this for real?
