It didn’t occur to me till I started reading The Falcon Thief: A True Tale of Adventure, Treachery, and the Hunt for the Perfect Bird that there was also a possible threat to the eagle herself: poachers, who steal raptor eggs and chicks. His first surmise seems like a good one – that the feathers are meant to hide the eggs from other female swallows seeking to parasitize the nest, by disrupting the parasite’s timing (if eggs are present, the parasite would know that the nesting mother is ready to incubate – that is, incubate not only her own eggs, but the parasite’s, as well).

While females hatch from larger eggs and are initially heavier than their brothers, after ten days, the male chicks weigh almost 50% more than their sisters, as they receive a higher quantity and quality of prey from their parents ( source ). Apparently, King Parrot are an Australian grindcore band formed in Melbourne in 2010.

The breeding season in the north of Australia starts from about July 1st and there are often several attempts if the eggs fail, are lost or the chicks don’t survive. On July 1st 2007 an egg was laid by a Pied Oystercatcher that was known to be an adult in 2002 and had been banded in nearby Roebuck Bay.

As 2012 draws to a close we here at 10,000 Birds thought that it would be a great idea if we, like we did in 2010 and 2011 , shared our Best Birds of the Year. Red Junglefowl by Mike Bergin Clare Kines chose an egg as his Best Bird of the Year. And, no, I am not kidding. What is it that makes a bird the best or the year?
