A little bit of research when I got home unraveled the ways of publishers here and in Great Britain. The accounts aim for specificity and authority; dates and locations of rarity sightings are given, and research articles on nesting and behavior are cited. Even during the breeding season the birds appear to be quite unwary of humans.

Author Joshua Hammer, who previously wrote about a different type of real-life-unexpected-caper in The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu , read about Lendrum in the Times of London in 2017, realized the possibilities, did the research. We start with Lendrum being arrested in 2010 at the Birmingham (U.K.) 2019), and now this book.

Prior research has shown that the Loons that return in a given year to a given nest on a lake somewhere in Canada or the norther tier of US states are often the same ones that were there the previous year, though with some never returning because they did not survive the trials of migration. But now there is some research on that.
