It is about as yellow-rumped as the Narcissus Flycatcher – the Chinese name which translates as “white-browed flycatcher” is a bit better at highlighting the difference between the two species. Other species in the same esthetic vein (smallish, cute, colorful) included the Siberian Rubythroat.

They were my target species, and I remember being delighted in not only seeing them well, but finding feeding flocks that were remarkably unconcerned about being watched. It’s a species with numerous alternative names, of which the commonest is Waldrapp, the name used in Germany and until recently, commonly used in English.

I was happy to read that the wood stork ( Mycteria Americana ), a bird near and dear to me, was down-sited from the status of endangered to threatened species. The rise of the Cornell Lab is reflected in its budget, which was approximately $10 million in 2003 and $30 million in 2018. It’s Macaulay Library contains a wealth of photos and audio recordings for approximately 10,000 species. Of course, this has been highly beneficial to birders. There are few stories in ornithology I enjoy more than those of a Lazarus taxon, a species thought to be extinct being found alive and well in some hidden part of the world. No fossils of this species have ever been found of it, contrasting against the generally good fossil record of birds here. Where does it breed?

There were similar FWS studies using similar methodologies with similar findings in 2003 , 2007 , and 2013. Others might require a life list or the ability to identify a specific number of species, or some other criteria. That’s a lot of birding.
