Red-crowned Parrots have been present in southern California since at least 1963 but weren’t added to the California checklist until 2001. Red-crowned Parrot in Irvine Regional Park Despite the number of species involved only one, the Red-crowned Parrot , is considered countable by the California Bird Records Committee.

So, I was very excited when I heard that Rick Wright was writing a book about sparrows, the first treatment of North American sparrows since 2001, possibly the first book about sparrows of North America, depending on your definition of that geographic area. Rick Wright agrees. There is also a strong educational component here.

But recent trends are disturbing: after years of stability, the wintering bird community declined dramatically after 2001. It is the fairest, most inclusive, and simplest option that could be adopted, and it is consistent with the addition of Hawaii. Although the declines are clear, the causes are not. Research is ongoing.
