A Lake Reborn… sort of

My outing’s total count for water-dependent waterfowl, shorebirds, herons, gulls, and terns (I’m leaving land-loving Cattle Egrets out of this count) was around 120; the count for a similar date in 2018 was around 2000 individuals. I had never seen so little life at the lake. Still, there were a few good signs.

Kalbarri: The Quintessential Outback

It is close to the small town of the same name on the coast of the Indian Ocean, it was our first stop on a nearly 2000 km trip north from Perth, and while it didn’t hold many birds, it certainly provided scenery in abundance. We didn’t see much wildlife but there were Red Kangaroos, Willy Wagtails and an Australian Darter .

Water Feature Visitors

It’s probably about 300 square feet in size, holding maybe 2000 gallons of water. In addition to nest boxes around the property and bird feeders in the yard, the water feature is our most efficient wildlife magnet. We have a small water feature off our back porch. Birds, in particular, can’t resist running water.
