A few more Pied Oystercatchers start to breed

We know Pied Oystercatchers have used the area since 2000 and most likely for many years before that. However, once they have chicks to protect they have a lot more work to do. The pair of Pied Oystercatchers that nest about 2 kilometres south of the Surf Club have a particular rocky outcrop that they like to nest on.

The nest site has moved occasionally since I first observed one on Cable Beach in 2000. This rocky area high up beyond the beach sand offers great camouflage and protection. They will do it for other threats as a distraction to protect their eggs or chicks. I suppose they know me! One large Pied Oystercatcher family !
