Students, veterinarians address animal welfare scenarios during annual contest

The 23rd annual AVMA Animal Welfare Assessment Contest, or AWJAC, took place November 17-19 at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Participants completed in-person assessments of the welfare of animals in a variety of scenarios, including laboratory rats, farmed bison, cage-free laying hens, and tortoises in a zoo.

Toronto Zoo's Remaining Elephants to Go to Sanctuary

Not only is Toronto closing its elephant exhibit, but the City Council voted to send the remaining elderly elephants to the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) sanctuary instead of another zoo. This is excellent news.

Questionable Practices at the Calgary Zoo

Another animal dies at the Calgary Zoo and more questions are being raised about their practices. I don't track zoos, but this seems like an unusually high number of casualties. They were a part of the zoo’s breeding program for the rare birds. In May 2008, 41 of the 43 rays at the Calgary Zoo’s 37,000-litre touch-tank died.

"Zoo from Hell" Owner Convicted in New York

A farm-animal breeder who ran what a prosecutor called "the zoo from hell" was convicted Tuesday of animal cruelty. At the time of the raid, Rockland County prosecutor Anthony Dellicarri described the property as "kind of like a petting zoo gone out of control" and "the zoo from hell.".
