Legendary game show host Bob Barker says it will cost $200,000 to move three elephants from the Toronto Zoo to a California sanctuary, and he doesn't mind paying for it himself. Toronto city council voted in October to move the elephants to a facility run by PAWS (Performing Animal Welfare Society) near Galt, Calif., called ARK 2000.

I do think that in my lifetime greyhound racing will end, circuses will be animal-free, elephants and marine mammals won't be in zoos, and fur might even be banned. I'm not saying welfare reform is the answer, but that ceasing the use of an animal is the only action that will completely alleviate suffering.

In the past I have attributed some of this conflict to differences between the conservation mindset and that of animal rights/animal welfare. Perhaps it would be better to move the tigers to that bigger reserve, or maybe a zoo. I still think that distinction is important, but it isn’t sufficient to explain what is going on here.
