The pups each weighed less than three pounds at birth (1.04 kg) and were about two feet long (58 cm-62 cm.).

Something was clearly badly wrong with both of his back legs, I’m no vet, but I would guess they had both been broken. We tried to sight and count the pack twice every day so that if any of the dogs got snared we’d know quickly and could get a vet in to dart them, free them and clean up the wound.

Fascinating wildlife viewing? Yes, Virginia, there really was a Santa Claus who got pelted with snowballs at the Vet. As we stood in the cold, punching up the zoom on our bins, we saw plenty of gulls ( Ring-bills , I assume) riding the floes. One had just caught some type of fish from the river. Their thievery is well-noted.

Not having a smart phone, I called a friend in New York and had him Google up some wildlife rehabilitators’ numbers, but they were all out of service. Leaving it there did not seem like a good option. A different Hoary Bat, on a better day. It turns out, helping a bat is hard. A second call netted only Animal Control’s number.

Dedicated keepers at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Nairobi Elephant Nursery in Kenya protect baby Shukuru from the cold and rain, and the risk of pneumonia, with a custom-made raincoat. A mobile vet unit was able to tranquilize her, clean her wounds, and extract the spear.

I was working at the Coastal Wildlife Rescue Center here in Alabama, and he had either been blown in during a storm or caught a ride on a ship.

No matter what you think of them and their connection to Jack Hanna and the fact that they use their injured animals for "educational purposes," they have a fantastic facility to rehabilitate and release wildlife.

Hmm, better call a wildlife rehabilitator. Here’s an idea: find out if there’s a wildlife center or nature sanctuary near you. Google the name of your town, followed by “wildlife rehabilitator.” Call your vet and ask who takes care of injured local wildlife. Somebody found him by the side of the road.
