Coincidentally, last night was a board meeting for our homeowner's association, and though I wasn't on the agenda there's always time for homeowner comments about, say, the petting zoo and pony rides that are scheduled for the spring "BBQ" ( here 's part one of this story). And there's not much from the health angle for pony rides.

Like a "BBQ, pony rides and a petting zoo!" When I started thinking about trying to get the association to cancel the pony rides and petting zoo (which are often part of one business as a quick Google search of " traveling petting zoo " will demonstrate), my several-year vegan husband said, "What's the use?

I'm giving the book a vegan/animal rights message because that's my lens. Objectively, however, though the use message is there, believe it or not, you can talk about enslaving animals and still not present a clear vegan message. Or any vegan message. There is no mention of food or skin or zoos.

There is a general consensus that vegetarianism and veganism are different philosophically. I do think that in my lifetime greyhound racing will end, circuses will be animal-free, elephants and marine mammals won't be in zoos, and fur might even be banned. I'm still not sure why vegan education can't be part of any of these efforts. ).

But what I do is "imposing" or "forcing" veganism and atheism on my child. When my husband and I first adopted Baby Sky, several friends and relatives asked, "are you going to make her be a vegan? Animals existed for my entertainment in zoos, water parks and at circuses. And what happens if she decides to eat meat later on?"
