AVMF donates to Turkey, Syria to aid earthquake relief

The American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) and Merck Animal Health announced April 5 that they are donating $100,000 to support recovery efforts and care for animals in the wake of earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

The “Turkeys” of Costa Rica

That last little bit is also why we call it “Turkey Day”! In Costa Rica, although I did spend a memorable one years ago in the Osa Peninsula where flocks of parrots flew into the mangroves while we feasted on turkey, pie, and the works, we have no actual Wild Turkeys , nor an official Thanksgiving.

Turkey Vultures have a wingspan and weight similar to that of Egyptian Vultures. a The Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture looks very similar to the Turkey Vulture , but is a bit smaller.

Turkey Vultures Get No Respect!

The Turkey Vulture ( Cathartes aura ) is probably one of the most misunderstood birds in North America. link] Then there is the “delta wing posture” when Turkey Vultures face the sun and often preen. I think Turkey Vultures deserve a lot more respect from we humans and especially birders.

Wild Turkeys at Flatrock Brook Nature Center

There is a flock of Wild Turkeys that strut around like they own the place and they might very well be right. After all, there is no hunting and while I watched the turkeys they routed a feral cat that dared come near the flock of twelve which consisted of two tom turkeys and ten hens.
