The Humane Society of the United States, SPCA of East Texas and Humane Society of North Texas worked with the Smith County District Attorney's Office to rescue 50 horses from a Lindale property. Some even suffered from parasite infestation and overgrown hooves. 50 surviving horses were rescued.

An Arlington, Texas, municipal judge ruled that the animals suffered from neglect and cruel conditions, and an appeal by the company's owners to a higher court was denied last weekend. (See, husband, this is why I like PETA!) From the Detroit Free Press.

SAEN says previous USDA reports revealed primates have died at the Texas lab from dehydration and hypothermia, while others have simply been "found dead" -- possibly without veterinary care -- after suffering from serious disease conditions that include temperatures up to 105 degrees. Red-billed Curassow ( Crax blumenbachii ), a large, ground-dwelling bird belonging to the same family as the more familiar Plain Chachalaca of southern Texas, was never a very widespread species.

I am deeply troubled and angry that the National Institute of Health wants to move almost 200 chimpanzees from this facility to a laboratory in Texas where they may be subjected to testing. This is a matter of human compassion to prevent the further suffering of animals that have already served this species in prior experiments.

Though all birds will be somehow impacted by climate change, I think it is important to note that not all will suffer. High elevation species will surely suffer from shifting and reduced habitat, and that process seems to have started already. Will early-arriving birds suffer from having to endure late winter storms?
