And of course, there are Cattle Egrets ( Bubulcus ibis ) and several species of cowbirds that rarely stray too far from livestock. But efforts like The Bobolink Odyssey , a project run by the Perlut Lab of the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine, are attempting to bridge that divide by investigating land management practices in Vermont that balance the needs of both farmers and grassland birds.

It really depends on where the strays and vagrants show up in the second half of the year. But even after all that, you’d still be nearly 25 species shy of the record, and the difference has to come from chasing strays and vagrants when and where they show up. It’s a special bird and while I’ve seen them in Minnesota and Vermont, I’d love to see one in New York. The other obvious piece of advice is to go for every vagrant or stray as soon as you hear about it.

Less predictable are the particulars of the style itself, which coalesced at several Vermont breweries around the middle of the current decade. American White Pelicans have been making a bit of a splash in the northeast United States lately, with more and more birds straying into the region over the years. In North American birding, east versus west is the most basic geographic division of the continent.
