RECENT BIRDING AT COORAN, SUNSHINE COAST

I was asked by a new birder about the site’s potential and I remarked we should expect between 40 to 50 species for our circa two kilometre stroll. A crop of Eucalypt trees had been planted and clearly coppiced, apparently to feed recovering koalas from Steve Irwin’s [he of Crocodile Hunter fame] family’s zoo and wildlife hospital.

Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) recently proposed reintroducing California Condors in the Pacific Northwest. One management tool used by FWS is reintroduction of an endangered species into its former range. In other words, an experimental population of an “endangered” species is treated as “threatened,” which has fewer protections.

I live near a small zoo. All of the animals, birds and reptiles who live there are native species who were once injured, have gone through rehabilitation, and ended up with a permanent disability which prevented their return to the wild. The man arrived at the zoo with bloody puncture wounds up and down both arms.
