I remember the very first time I saw the national bird of Venezuela. The Venezuelan Troupial has a large range, and can be found in Venezuela (obviously), Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, and a number of Caribbean Islands. There was no mistake: I was looking at a Venezuelan Troupial. Venezuelan Troupial.

Three corrupt police officers in Trinidad and Tobago robbed a couple of Venezuelan wildlife smugglers and were subsequently arrested themselves. Over 1,000 animals were rescued, including 500 bull finches and 300 picoplats, The rescued wildlife also included monkeys, parrots, macaws and other species from Venezuela.

It had been some months since we had been in the hills of Trinidad’s Northern Range, and let it be known that all forests are very different. But with a Collared Trogon calling above us as well as all three species of honeycreepers feeding at eye-level, we were well and truly occupied. You can view the eBird list here.

In the latest instalment of the ongoing documentation of the curious recurrence of the number three in the avifauna of Trinidad and Tobago, we arrive on the triad of Grassquits. With the country itself having a tri- prefix, the island of Trinidad features three mountain ranges – one of which is called the Trinity Hills.

And while we didn’t see or hear a ton of species (29 by my tally) there were some pretty darn good birds in that small total. More interesting to the non-birders were the Rufous-tailed Jacamar and Trinidad Motmots that we saw, though they did stay rather distant. We saw several feeding on strangler fig. She was very cooperative.

While the combination of the words “coast” and “forest” may conjure images of tidal mudflats and mangroves or even coconut trees, the northern coastline of Trinidad features tropical rainforest that plunges steeply into the bejeweled waters of the Caribbean Sea. It almost looks as if the bird is underwater!
